What is ShoutCast? SHOUTcast is a multiplatform freeware audio streaming technology, developed by Nullsoft. SHOUTcast uses MP3 encoding of audio content and HTTP (though multicast can be used) as the transport protocol to broadcast web radio, also known as Internet radio. It runs on Windows, FreeBSD, GNU/Linux, Mac OS X and Solaris.
SHOUTcast is software that allows users to set up their own Internet radio servers using provided software. The output format is supported by multiple clients including the widely popular Nullsoft Winamp, Windows Media Player, XMMS, Zinf and Apple iTunes. Using the software, users may set up radio servers for their own needs. Current uses include listening to music as well as live broadcasting of events for the average person.
High bitrate shoutcast stations are generally of higher quality than their RealAudio counterparts.

What hardware is required? At very least all you need is just your PC. Using just your PC you can stream audio files from your PC to other users on the internet. If you are wishing to stream live voice all you need is a microphone and a sound card. Today almost all PCs include the required hardware. As a general rule if your computer can play audio back, you have the required hardware. Of course you may always become a more advanced station by adding audio mixers, additional microphones, CD players, DAT decks, etc. As long as you have the line out from your mixing board or microphone connected to your computers microphone or line in jack, it can be streamed through ShoutCast.
